Tractor ram knocks over bystanders during illegal race in Punjab, injuring 4: Police

Four people were injured when a tractor rammed into bystanders during an illegal tractor race in a village in Phagwara, police said on Sunday.

A case was registered against 11 men for their involvement in an illegal tractor race in Domeli village and three of them were arrested, said Harmanbir Singh Gill, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Jalandhar range police.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

Gill said they were charged under relevant sections of the IPC, including 308 (attempted manslaughter) and 279 (rash driving). Three tractors were also impounded, he said.

The injured bystanders were identified as Gaganjit Singh from Barbeli village, Amit from Rehana Jatan village and Gurpreet Singh from Munna village, police said. Tractor driver Jaspal Singh was also injured in the accident, they said.

The home ministry said the Punjab government has banned all such competitions, including tractor or dog racing and cockfighting.
