New Delhi:

On Sunday, the government dismissed reports that the Agnipath program had been relaunched, saying the social media messages were false and clarifying that no such decision had been taken in this regard.

“A #fake WhatsApp message claims that the Agnipath scheme has been relaunched after a review and renamed as ‘Sainik Saman scheme’ which includes extension of tenure to 7 years, 60% permanent staff and increased revenue… The Indian government has taken steps not to Such a decision,” the Press and Information Bureau clarified on its X account.

The widely circulated false message contained numerous spelling errors that made it appear questionable.

The opposition has criticized the Agnipath scheme from the beginning and strongly questioned its credibility during the Lok Sabha polls, with the Congress “promising” to scrap the scheme if voted to power at the Centre.

The Agnipath program is a “service-style” program that will be implemented in September 2022 and aims to recruit soldiers below the rank of officer to join the three branches of the armed forces for a period of four years.

Personnel recruited under this system were called Agniveers.
