3 Israeli army soldiers killed in Hamas rocket attack in Gaza

Soldiers shot while guarding heavy machinery, tanks and bulldozers

Jerusalem:

The Israeli military said a series of rockets fired from the besieged Gaza corridor towards the Kerem Shalom crossing early Sunday killed three soldiers and injured a dozen others.

The military told AFP that three of the 12 injured were in serious condition.

The armed wing of the Palestinian group Hamas earlier claimed responsibility for the rocket attack, leading Israeli authorities to close a crossing used to deliver aid to Gaza.

The military said 14 rockets were fired at the Rafah crossing from areas near the crossing.

In response, the Air Force responded quickly and destroyed the launcher that fired the shells, military spokesman Peter Lerner told reporters during an online briefing.

“From our perspective, this is a very serious incident, it is unacceptable and the IDF is investigating why the soldier was killed when the siren sounded,” he said.

He said the army was “not aware of any interception during the incoming fire”.

“The Air Force will investigate exactly what happened,” Lerner added.

The soldiers were shot while guarding heavy machinery, tanks and bulldozers stationed in the area.
