Officials at Kolkata Airport told TOI that the installation of electrical wires and fiber optic cables in the tower has been completed. Civil works were completed in February.
“We are installing automated equipment, integrating approach radar and advanced ground movement guidance and control systems and VHF communications equipment new tower. Existing systems will be enhanced with new capabilities in the new tower. Some equipment takes some time to arrive. We expect the installation to be completed and trials to begin in October.
The decision to start operating the tower before other facilities was intended to deflect criticism of delays in operating the ATN complex.
“The automated system currently in use was installed in 2013. The latest system has new features. The existing VHF antenna has only one output, while the new antenna will have three outputs.
